Where will my child attend school?
A student is required to attend school in the attendance area where the student's legal guardian resides. All students in grades 6-8 attend Gavilan View Middle School. In grades K-5, contact either La Joya, McKinnon, New Republic, or Santa Rita Elementary Schools or call the District Office at 443-7200, to ask about your attendance area. With district and school approval, a student may attend a school outside their attendance area if the desired school has openings. If you need information about schools with openings for intra-district transfer applications, please call the school offices directly.

How do I register my child for school?
Registration is conducted at each school site. Parents must bring the following: proof of residence within the boundaries of Santa Rita Union School District (a utility bill, mortgage or rent statement confirming your current address), the child's immunization record, and proof of the child's age.
The District also requires that a child have a complete physical exam and that a health record of immunizations be on file at the school. Students who will be returning to the same school that they attended last year, do not need to register for the current school year. For further specifics on registering your child, please call the school in your attendance area.
How do I register my child for kindergarten?
Kindergarten students who have reached age five by December 2 of the current school year, can be registered at the school in your attendance area. To register kindergarten students, you will need: immunization records, proof of residency and proof of birth. For more information on registering kindergarten students, please contact the school in your attendance area.
What is the class size?
In the 1997-98 school year, we lowered the student-teacher ratio in the grade 1 to at most 20 students per class. We will maintain this student-teacher ratio in the current school year.
How are busing needs met?
Most schools are centrally located so that students may walk to school. Busing is provided by the district for elementary students (K-5) who live more than one mile from their school, and for middle school students (6-8) who live more than three miles from their school. Transportation is also available when students would have to cross an especially dangerous area. For further information on transportation please contact the Transportation Department at 443-7207.
Is a meal program available at all schools?
The Food Services Department provides a wide selection of hot and cold menus at all schools through the district's lunch and breakfast programs. Free or reduced-price meals are also available to student from households that meet income eligibility guidelines. Applications for free or reduced meals are available at each school office. For additional information, please contact the Food Services Department at 443-7227.
Is there a child-care program on all campuses?
Before-and after-school child care is offered to parents through the Salinas YMCA program. The YMCA is a fee-based program. The YMCA childcare program is located at the La Joya School. For more information, please contact the YMCA Office at 758-3811.
